Multiple Teams · Wildcats Win UKC Championship


The De Soto High School cross country team competed in the 2020 United Kansas Conference Championship Thursday in Lansing. The Wildcats won all four races and crowned four individual UKC champions. 

The junior varsity girls started the afternoon with an outstanding performance. Freshman Gracie Smith (1) won the race with a time of 22:46. Alison Roy (2), Ashlyn Jennings (3), and Ella Minihan (4) were the next three runners to finish, then Ailey Freeman (7) crossed the line giving the Cats a winning score of 17. Kadey Waite (10), Liz Schottler (11), Bella Wiltfong (12), and Josephine Butler (24) rounded out the line up and helped the JV girls secure their first conference title. 

The junior varsity boys ran next and dominated the competition. The first 10 runners to finish the race were all wearing De Soto uniforms. Senior Kaleb Barnes (1) was the individual winner with Connor Jacober (2), Luke Swarts (3), Colter Mabe (4), and Clayton Tilly (5) leading the team to a perfect score of 15.  Brady Hudelson (6), Keaton Higgins (7), Luke Marriott (8), Colby Loomis (9), and Reed Richards (10) were the next five runners to finish, before Lyndon Budimlija (14), Caleb Woleben (25), and Camron Hoffman (40) helped the JV boys win their third straight conference championship. 

The varsity girls toed the line next for their 5000 meter race, and were just as successful. Sophomore Sophie Landrum (1) is the girl’s UKC Runner of the Year, posting a winning time of 19:53. Nicole Schottler (5), Katie Beyer (7), Hope Marriott (8), and Katelyn Gress (10) earned All Conference honors, along with Isabell Butler (15) who helped the team win with a score of 26. 

The varsity boys ran the final race of the day and completed the sweep. Senior Carson Sturdy (1) is now the two-time UKC boy’s Runner of the Year. Sturdy led the entire race Thursday, finishing under 16 minutes. Kyle Newberry (4), Brady Huggins (6), Owen Gier (7), and Connor Gibson (8) earned All Conference honors by finishing in the top 10. Luke LaCombe (11) and Jamie Brown (12) finished close behind helping the team win with a score of 26. 

Next Saturday the varsity teams travel to Turner for the 2020 KSHSAA Regional Meet. Both teams will race to qualify for the Kansas 5A State Meet in Wichita on October 31.
