Varsity Cross Country · Cross Country Girls 9th, Boys 6th at State Meet

The De Soto high school cross country team competed in the 2019 Kansas 5A State Meet Saturday at Rim Rock Farm near Lawrence. Both teams finished their seasons ranked in the top-10, with the girls 9th and the boys 6th. 

Junior Carson Sturdy (10) earned All-State honors to lead the boys to their second top-10 finish in as many years. Senior Jack Loomis (30), sophomore Kyle Newberry (39), sophomore Brady Huggins (55), and sophomore Owen Gier (75) combined to help the boys score 169, which tied Emporia. The team’s sixth runner, junior Henry Rokusek (90), broke the tie in favor of the Wildcats then sophomore Clayton Tilly (91) finished, securing sixth place for DHS.

The first five DHS girl to cross the finish line were freshman Abby Sheerin (30), sophomore Katelyn Gress (38), junior Nicole Schottler (59), sophomore Katie Beyer (69), and sophomore Alison Roy (76). They combined to score 207, along with seniors Lane Hileman (79) and Justine Wheeler (95) the team finished in ninth place.

Next Saturday 25 runners from De Soto will travel to Sioux Falls, South Dakota for a 5k race against athletes from Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Nebraska, South Dakota, and Wisconsin at the Nike Cross Regionals Meet.
