Varsity Cross Country · Cross Country Races in the Chile Pepper Festival

The De Soto high school varsity cross country team raced in the 2019 Chile Pepper Cross Country Festival hosted by the University of Arkansas. The Wildcats competed in the premier “El Caliente” division, against hundreds of athletes representing teams from dozens of Midwest and Southeastern states. The boys finished 41st out of 101 teams. The girls took 33rd out of 81 teams.

The boy’s 5k race included over 770 runners. Junior Carson Sturdy finished 24th. Sturdy’s speed and endurance were on display late in the race, as he passed four competitors in the final 400 meters. Kyle Newberry (232), Jack Loomis (285), Owen Gier (286) and Luke Lacombe (359) scored for the team, with Loomis and Gier running new personal best times. Jamie Brown (475) was the team’s sixth runner to cross the finish line with Henry Rokusek representing the seventh.

The girl’s 5k race featured 630 runners. Sophomore Katelyn Gres (178) and freshman Abby Sheerin (182) finished one second apart to lead DHS. Justine Wheeler (203), Lane Hileman (231), and NIcole Schottler (247) were close behind. Gress, Sheerin, Wheeler, Hileman, and Schottler all finished within 45 seconds of each other. Katie Byer (317) and Alison Roy (319) also finished one second apart. Both Byer and Roy ran new personal best times Saturday.

This week, those De Soto cross country runners unable to race Saturday in Topeka due to weather, will participate in the Cat Classic this Thursday at Shawnee Mission Park.
