The De Soto high school wrestling team concluded their season at the KSHSAA 5A State Wrestling Tournament in Wichita. Sophomores Zak Kalafut (113) and Lane Warner (126) along with juniors Jackson Mocca (152) and Luke Barger (182) represented DHS in the 34-team tournament, showcasing the best wrestlers in Kansas. Each of the Wildcats demonstrated the strength, courage, intelligence, and toughness required to be successful in this sport.
Kalafut’s season featured a 7th place finish at the Johnson County Classic, 5th place finishes at both the Lee’s Summit North and Derby tournaments, and a finishing 3rd at the UKC Tournament. He took 7th at Regionals to qualify for State and ended with a record of 20-20.
Warner’s season included 6th place finishes at both Derby and Junction City tournaments, finishing 4th at the Johnson County Classic, and taking 3rd at both the Lee’s Summit North Invitational and the UKC Tournament. He was 6th at Regionals to qualify for State and ended with a record of 23-21.
Mocca’s season was highlighted with a 4th place finish at the Johnson County Classic and 3rd place finishes at both the Lee’s Summit North Invitational and the UKC Tournament. He earned 8th at Regionals to qualify for State and ended with a 14-21 record.
Barger exhibited determination all season and his results showed progress and improvement each month. In December he took 8th at Lee’s Summit North and 5th at the Johnson County Classic. In January he finished 5th at Junction City and 4th at Derby. In February Barger was 2nd at the UKC Tournament and the Kansas 5A Regional Tournament Champion. He won two matches at the State Tournament to finish with a record of 29-13.
The 2019-2020 De Soto Wrestling season starts in November with the team looking to expand on the success of started by Kalafut, Warner, Mocca and Barger this season. Wrestlers interested in improving their abilities will have opportunities at wrestling camps and open rooms during the off season.
